Privacy, in plain language.
This policy explains how the CaptureTheLink browser extension processes data when you choose to send a web page or link to CaptureTheLink.
Effective date: August 20, 2026
Overview
The CaptureTheLink browser extension has one purpose: to let you send the current web page, or a link you explicitly select, to the CaptureTheLink submission form for review and manual submission.
The extension never submits a link automatically. You remain in control and must review the imported information, choose a category and confirm the submission on CaptureTheLink.
Data processed
The extension processes only the URL of the current page or the URL of a link selected through the browser's context menu. Processing starts only after you explicitly click a CaptureTheLink toolbar button, context-menu item or keyboard shortcut.
The selected URL is sent securely to capturethelink.com by opening the submission form in a new browser tab. The website may use the URL to check for an existing submission and retrieve public metadata such as the canonical URL, page title and meta description.
How the selected URL is used
The URL is used only to provide the extension's user-facing capture feature: opening and prefilling the CaptureTheLink submission form, checking for duplicate submissions and retrieving public page metadata.
If you complete the submission, the submitted URL and the information you approve become part of your CaptureTheLink contribution and may be displayed publicly. If you do not confirm the submission, the extension does not create a public post.
Data not collected by the extension
The extension does not monitor or collect browsing history in the background. It does not read or transmit page content, passwords, form entries, authentication cookies, personal communications, financial information or precise location.
The extension does not contain advertising, analytics, tracking technologies or remotely hosted executable code. It does not maintain a local history of captured URLs.
Storage and retention
The browser extension does not store captured URLs or browsing history. CaptureTheLink processes the selected URL while preparing the submission form. Routine server logs may temporarily contain request information for security, abuse prevention and service reliability.
If you confirm a submission, the submitted link is stored as community content until it is removed in accordance with CaptureTheLink's account and moderation features.
Security
The selected URL is transmitted to CaptureTheLink over HTTPS. The extension requests only the browser permissions required for its capture feature and does not request permanent access to all websites.
Browser permissions
activeTab: Provides temporary access to the current tab only after you invoke the extension. It is used to obtain the active page URL and does not provide continuous background access.
contextMenus: Adds “Submit this page to CaptureTheLink” and “Submit this link to CaptureTheLink” to the browser's right-click menu. A URL is processed only when you select one of these actions.
User control
You choose whether and when the extension processes a URL. You can stop all extension processing at any time by disabling or uninstalling the extension in your browser.
Authentication and account activity take place on the CaptureTheLink website. The extension does not access your password or authentication cookies.
Chrome Web Store Limited Use
CaptureTheLink's use and transfer of information received from Chrome APIs adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Information received through the extension is used only to provide or improve the extension's disclosed single purpose and is not used for unrelated purposes.
Changes to this policy
This policy may be updated if the extension's functionality or data practices change. The effective date at the top of this page identifies the current version.
